Curious facts and special features of Amsterdam houses:
Almost all of the houses have a lifting beam. Lifting beams appeared mainly in the 17th century when Amsterdam was the principal depot for trade goods and cellars and lofts were used initially for storage. This custom continued of 'winching' furnishing and fittings to the upper floors that did not fit the generally narrow Amsterdam staircases. If you keep your eyes open when walking through Amsterdam you will always see something been tackled somewhere.
Amsterdam houses are generally narrow buildings with 4 or 5 floors. Characteristic of Amsterdam houses is also the cord that runs along the stair banister to the upper floor. Pulling the cord on the upper floor will open the front door when someone rings the doorbell. There is not much room in the staircase and that is why the stairs are often steep.
Amsterdam houses are built on piles. The entire city is constructed on sandy soil that is not stable enough to support a house. Traditionally the technique employed was to build on timber pile foundations. Timber piles are generally 10 to 15 metres long. An average residential property requires some 20 piles. Nowadays concrete piles are used for foundations.
