Amsterdam Noord

On the north side of the River IJ, accessible by car via the IJ tunnel, or by the free ferry Veerpont (only for pedestrians and cyclists), you will find a special urban district of Amsterdam: Amsterdam-North. This part of the city has a very distinctive character because it used to be a collection of rural villages. This makes it one of the urban districts with the most open countryside.

Many shipyards were built in the 19th century in Amsterdam-North, of which a number continued to operate until the 1980s. The NDSM shipyard remains to this day and is now used as cultural center where parties and concerts are held.

'Boven 't IJ', or 'Above the IJ', is a popular shopping mall with specialized outlets and free parking.

With its friendly gardens and houses and the new safe bicycle path to propel you through the rural landscape, Amsterdam-North is a nice place to be. While there are parks, 'Vliegenbos' and the conservation area Waterland, the center of Amsterdam always remains nearby.

In the next few years the north bank of the IJ will be developed, with a new, modern residential neighborhood. The Film Museum too will be given spectacular new accommodation. By the time construction is completed the connection with downtown Amsterdam will have been improved, with subway trains to Amsterdam-North around 2010.
